  • Under the general direction of the President & Chief Executive Officer, this position provides a wide range of complex legal services and client consultation related to the operation and administration of the Maricopa County Special Health Care District dba MIHS, as well as oversees the risk management functions for the organization. Represents MIHS in legal proceedings or supervises such representation. Analyzes legal and regulatory issues affecting MIHS operations and develops MIHS and Board of Directors related policies. Supervises and trains attorneys and other professional staff assigned to MIHS legal department. Works collaboratively with the special counsel to the Board of Directors to enhance board and administrative communication and effectiveness.

    Qualifications:

    Requires a Juris Doctorate or Bachelor of Law Degree or a degree in a related field. Requires a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible relevant health care law experience in a corporate, public, or private law firm setting experience that demonstrates a deep understanding of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Prior experience in a large, complex healthcare organization, public health care delivery system, state, or government entity is preferable. Member of AZ State Bar or member of other state bar (AZ membership required within 12 months of hire date) is required. Requires an understanding of District policies and procedures, federal, state and local government agencies and methods of operation, educational, employment and criminal law, and current and developing issues in healthcare. Must have ability to proactively identify legal risks in the context of the business objectives of the organization, and develop solutions to address both. Must have a demonstrated ability to think creatively to develop and implement strategies to address complex system problems and opportunities. Requires the ability to demonstrate initiative, exercise good judgment and achieve results. Must have demonstrated success in building collaborative, high performing teams characterized by hands-on, results orientation aligned with strategic plans and goals. Requires excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills to communicate with employees at all levels and experience. Requires ability to effectively interact with senior management, medical staff leadership, and board members and operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker. Must exhibit excellent physician relationship skills in order to align interests and collaboratively achieve organizational objectives. Must be an entrepreneurial team player who can multitask. Must demonstrate the ability to manage and lead large organizations through periods of rapid and numerous changes. Must be able to work collaboratively to set system goals with senior leadership, agree on performance standards and monitor outcomes. Requires the ability to read, write and speak effectively in English.
